What is business communication skills?
The communication skills needed to interact in a social setting with friends and family are different than those used in a business environment. The ability to communicate effectively in a business setting requires skills that are unique to business situations. Employers in the business community seek professionals who possess the ability to deliver information in a clear and concise manner verbally and in a written format.
Professionals in a supervisory or management position may interview candidates to work in an organization. Managers must have the ability to listen effectively to an interviewee and ask the questions that elicit the most information on the candidate’s background and knowledge. Interviewers must also have the skills to communicate the duties of the position.
Professionals must have skills preparing business communications such as interoffice memos, email and business letters. Individuals composing business correspondence must have the skills to determine when it is appropriate to use an informal tone and when formal speech is necessary. For example, an email message to a co-worker reminding them of a meeting can have an informal tone, but emailing a department report to upper management requires a formal communication style.
